Ok, so one TB external drive should do it. Is there a HDD brand or model I
should look into?

You can use your Two TB ports any way you see fit. A second one is nice to have
because not all devices have two thunderbolt ports on them. Forexample the
Focusrite Clarett interfaces only have one Thunderbolt port on it so if you had
a computer with one thunderbolt port, you couldn’t also plug in a thunderbolt
hard drive as well. However some audio interfaces do have two thunderbolt
ports, so you can plug a hard drive into that interface and then plug that
interface into the computer. If you only had one thunderbolt port. So having
two ports just gives you a bit more flexibility.

At the very least you will want to have your Mac OS and all software on the
internal drive and use a second hard drive for recording. However if you aren’t
recording more than one track at a time and not working with large projects you
could probably get away with just using your internal drive for everything.
Some power users however do have a separate system drive, a separate drive for
recording onto, and a third drive for all their samples and loops.

Interesting question. I have two TB ports on my Mac. One for Audio interface
and I thought the other for external drives. Is this a waste of an TB port?

Secondly. Is it true it is best to have PT and all other associated recording
software on one drive with a dedicated recording drive. Mac software being on
the internal drive.

Third. Should the midi sound library be on it’s own drive.

Be patient with the newbee.

I got that one from Sweetwater. It is a great drive Nate you will enjoy it. I
have had it as long as I have been on this Protools list so I guess that’s
around four or five years never a problem. It runs for days or weeks.

Cool. I had a Glyph CD burner at one point and the thing that amazed me was
that it had a 5-year warranty. It crapped out after 4 years and Glyph replaced
it, no questions asked and gave me another 5-year warranty on the second drive.
Can't beat that customer service.

Hello Slau,

I went with a Glyph Studio 2TB USB 3 drive. It was recommended by Avid and
after I read the specs I pulled the trigger.

Thanks for the input,

Hi Nate,

I've had great experiences with both Western Digital and seagate drives. In
every case, they were either seventy-two hundred or ten thousand rpm drives for
the HDD models. I've used the same brands for the SSD drives for sample
libraries but not for recording. I've never used them via USB, although these
days, USB 3 is plenty fast. Thus far, I've used 1 terabyte drives but now
looking into eight or ten terabyte models for HDD. As always, SSDs are crazy
expensive when getting into those capacities. If this is for recording, 7200
rpm HDDs are plenty fast and you can pick them up for around seventy dollars.

Sorry, a little off topic, but I respect the opinions of people on this list
more than some of the more popular lists.

Looking to get an external hard drive for my new setup, I will need to go USB,
and I have found that others are having success with this. What are your
thoughts on USB and external drive brands around here on the list?

Thanks, Regards,
