Your insertion cursor is not in the track. Make sure you have another audio 
track adjacent to the one you're trying to edit and move the selection to that 
track with either Control+semicolon or Control+p and move it back to the 
original track, then delete the waveform. BTW, the edit tools don't matter 
because you're only using keyboard commands for the insertion cursor. Edit 
tools only matter when you're using the mouse pointer and clicking within the 
clips themselves.
