Guys,
I actually live with Mr. Glaser. I've first hand seen the interface
which he is using, and even have heard recordings first hand done with
the mixer both in Reaper, and in ProTools.
What's happening which is causing clipping and squeel on his mike is
that he's got the gain way to high. This mixer has a direct monitor
button. I have several times gone down stairs to his studio and have
helped him reconfigure the mixer correctly, and have shown him how to
set that control so he'd not hear things through headphones on the
direct monitor, but only in the DAW. I'm not sure if he's moving that
button's configuration or not, but I *can* tell you 100% the time that I
have tried helping him, every time I've done so, I've gotten the board
working correctly.
Turning things really hot is something I had to learn to quit doing
myself. I have actually fried a few input capassitors on a few mixers by
running the thing so high. I'm starting to wonder if Ronald might have
done the same thing here. I don't know that for sure, but I wonder.
The thing with these SM58 and even SM57 mikes is, they are dynamic, not
condensers. Therefore, they naturally are going to be quieter, and take
more power to get the same results as something like I have upstairs
with a Blue Bluebird.
I've suggested several times to him, rather than running his input so
hot, run the volume up on the output side after the recording phase
either with a trim plugin, or with a compressor or such. The only issue
with a compressor though is, that'll add some color which may not be
desired. This is why I'd go first for a trim, and really even then, I
wouldn't. If anything, I've told him, I'd honestly look at getting a
hardware mike Pre, if he really insists on using the SM58/57 type mikes.
The other thing is, that Peevee mike he got wasn't really designed for
music vocals. It was more designed to work with Dragon Naturally
Speaking from Nuance for speech dictation. It's not a headset, but, still.
Too, a lot of it is mike placement. But I won't go into that or we'd be
here practically all day.
I really really seriously seriously doubt that changing out the mixer is
going to fix this problem. A new mixer is no substitute for correcting
human error. I'm not saying I'm perfect. Most of you on here probably
know way more than I do, but I've offered helped a few times, and things
keep seeming after I phhysically walk downstairs and fix things, to come
unglued over and over.
I'm not sure in a more elementary way how to explain to him what is
going on and why. Maybe one of you can help me out here.
Chris.

Ok, here is the situation.
I have the following set up, Yamaha MG 10XU mixer/audio interface,
sure sm beta 58 dynamic microphone, a peavey small condenser microphone.
what is happening is when I plug my peavey into my yamaha I then can
toggle between hearing my monitars/ headphones by using the USB button
on channel 9 /10 but when plugging in the sure microphone I can no
longer do this.
Why is this and how can I get the same results as the peavey?
Also I have to run my gain almost really hot to get any sound out of
either microphones; the peavey, isa phantom powered one; the sure is a
dynamic micriphone.
Would it be better for me to get a different audio interface/control
surface? or should i invest in getting a cloudlifter?
If the cloudlifter has anyone had any good luck with them?
And if another audio interface/control surface which should I get?
Please let me know.
