I don’t know anything about external GPU’s. However, I can safely say that you 
can run the Mini headless, as long as you grab the Compulab Fit Headless 
dongle, which runs about 15 bucks on amazon.
I run my 2012 mini headless all the time on stage with MainStage, and can run 
Pro TOols out in the field with only the dongle plugged in. Hope this helps.
