Dave> My name is Dave Heller and right now I'm in Iraq, I'll be
Dave> getting back this summer and I'd like very much to start
Dave> wardriving as a hobby. I do a lot of geocaching now and I
Dave> recently bought a laptop with (n) version wireless, is there a
Dave> specific antennae or wifi card I can start with? I like the
Dave> idea of wardriving but there is a lot I don't know about the
Dave> wireless internet. Any suggestions you might provide would be
Dave> great. I have a gateway P-7811FX and I'd like to find a stable,
Dave> effective reliable antennae and card setup.

Connecting an external antenna to a laptop radio can be a bitch.
Following the lead of some others, including Jason McArthur, I started
wardriving a few years ago using embedded devices. The current
device of choice is based on an Alix board, and is (partially)
described our wiki:

  http://wiki.personaltelco.net/AlixStumbler

and in the WgtStumbler page it refers to. I power mine from an
external 12V SLA battery, but many permutations are possible. I
upload my data to wigle.net. It is fun and stupid and wasteful, all
at the same time!
