Jeff (and others),
I'm not sure if this user's list is the best way to get feedback
to the PTR1 developers, but I've got a few issues to mention and thought
I'd do it here.
First of all, I'm currently running firmware version 1.12. I
haven't bothered to upgrade to 1.13 since there's a new release coming
in only a month anyway. So some of my comments may very well have been
addressed in the 1.13 update but I'll mention them all anyway.
* Easy Fast Rewind and Forward Feature Added
When you press and hold fast rewind and forward for a while, it
continues fast rewind/forward until you press the play key.
There actually seems to be a related bug in my firmware. That
is, when performing cue or review on a book that exists on either a
CD-ROM or a microdrive the unit cues or reviews through it's internal
buffer and then spins up the media. The problem is that the unit
reaches the end of it's internal buffer prior to the permanent media
being ready to read more data. The effect is that you hear the high
pitched squeal (oh so reminiscent of those old fashoned cassette tapes)
and then you hear the squeal pause, hear the appropriate drive spin up,
and then hear the squeal resume. Sometimes the pause in squealing will
reoccur. My sense is that the PTR1 is not correctly managing it's
buffer given the consideration of the high-speed operation the user is
requesting. In short, this really aught to be addressed as it is a very
annoying bug!
* Selecting waiting sounds or a tone
With new firmware users can select 3 difference waiting sounds (Musical
waiting sound a single tone or No sound).
Hmm, how about allowing us to select no waiting, I'd much more
like it if all things happened instantaniously <grin>.
* No Voice Guide When changing The Main Volume Level
According to the users' feedbacks, it is not necessary to guide the
playback volume while playing the disc. New firmware will not feature a
volume level guide when reading.
Actually, I don't think this one goes far enough. If I'm
reading a title, I don't need voice guidance either when changing the
main volume or the speed. This is because I'll hear the effect of my
change. The voice guidance typically gets in the way. Another issue
I've got has to do with the way audio guidance occurs. It seems that
guidance *always* interrupts reading. Why is this necessary? If I plug
in, or unplug, the power adapter, why must reading stop to indicate this
to me with a tone. If the tone must occur, why can't it be mixed into
the playing audio stream (at a much lower volume) instead of
interrupting.
I'm a very new user of this machine, and like it quite a bit.
I'm only listing these issues because it is the current topic of
discussion not because I'm dissatisfied with the unit. Perhaps I should
install that 1.13 upgrade just to see what happens?
A final note (at least for now):
I find the status information presented when I hold down the
play button doesn't really meet my needs well. It's all well and good
to present total time, elapsed time, remaining time etc, but I find that
mostly what I want to know is how far into the material I am. I would
suggest simply prepending a percentage to this status report and carying
that percentage out to two decimal places. In a 14 hour recording
that's a resolution of about 5 seconds. This way, I very quickly get an
idea of where I am and how much time remains. This may be a personal
preference thing, perhaps based upon one's usage of the machine, this
type of reporting would not be helpful. Just my idea based on how I've
used the machine thus far.
