Or purchase a powered mike designed to  directly drive a  low level
input.  I know that IRTI sells such a microphone .  There are probably
other sources.

Ed Lopez back again.  Make sure that you are in the mic input, not 
the line.  The mic input is not a stereo mic, so, if you want to 
record stereo, you would have to get a preamp, and then, plug the 
preamp in to the line  input, and then plug the mic into the preamp.
