The republic referendum is a rare opportunity to exercise the classic
HTV model of the Sydney Libertarians in the 1950s-60s, viz, write in:
YES we have
NO bananas

[AL] I disagree. Most of the people who we could influence will already
be likely to want to cast some form of informal vote because a) they
don't support the Monarchy, b) they don't think much of the phoney
republic proposals.
But if they do that the ARM could win, since despite their pretence not
all that many people do actually support the Monarchy, a completely
irrelevant side issue.
Our job is to persuade them to actually vote "No". Instead of just
reducing the number who support the phoney republic this also increases
the number who vote it down and greatly increases the chances of it
being defeated (effectively each person we persuade to vote "No" counts
for double the value of persuading somebody to vote informal - and in
any case many of those we coud persuade are likely to vote informal
anyway).
Success depends entirely on the referendum actually being rejected. Then
and ONLY then do we have a situation where people may be forced to think
about real constitutional change. If they succeed in passing the
referendum, even if HUGE numbers vote informal, the issue is dead, as
they hope.
