Purpose of the Timor list is responding to the genocide in East Timor. Many will want to go beyond band-aid and attack the causes. Otherwise we are merely helping set up an East Timor which continues to have to cower before a vicious and brutal empire right next door much as Finland had to cower before the Soviet empire until it broke up. People who risked their lives to save Jews from being murdered during the war were extraordinarily courageous, but without the smashing of the machine that was the ultimate problem, and the punishment of those responsible, the rate of murder would continue to far exceed the rate of rescue. I suggest that the Timor list is concerned with something more that the immediate protection of the survivors (or those survivors who haven't yet been kidnapped). Purpose of the neither list is broadly to oppose rule of Australia through a corrupt one-party-two-wings political system. Timor's relevance arises because the genocide in Timor has been aided and abetted by this corruption. Perhaps an immediate focus for both is the appalling treatment given to the Timorese refugees in Australia, including continued legal attempts to throw at least some of them out, and continued insulting references to them by the Australian Minister for Immigration as a "burden". And of course, in addition, the continued training of enemy soldiers and the continued pressure to restore the former friendly relationship with a murderous colonial empire in the interests of making a few very rich people even richer so that they in turn can use their influence to protect and enhance the careers of those who are furthering this rapprochement policy. (These careerists are unwittingly assisted by racist political correctness -- the notion that non-whites can't be expected to meet the moral standards expected of whites -- which is an issue for the Timor list).
