This is a timely reminder that the Westminster UNA's Charter 99 initiative
will be formally launched on United Nations Day (24 Oct 1999), giving
activists a couple more weeks to become inaugural signatories.

I urge you to look at it and endorse it online at
http://www.nettrek.com.au/~brian/Charter99.htm or obtain the text by email
from myself or Simon Bural < [EMAIL PROTECTED] >. It can be endorsed by
an online form, by email or by mailing or faxing your name and address
details to supplied addresses.

Charter 99 calls on representatives of the United Nations and member
countries to take immediate steps to counter the illegitimate pretensions of
wealthy states and corporations to be in control of "world governance" - and
to base the Third Millennium on the fundamental principles of:

** openness and accountability
** environmental sustainability
** security and peace
** equality and justice

To date there are signatories in over 60 countries. Some of the notables are
Noam Chomsky, poet laureate Andrew Motion and Professor Anthony Giddens,
director of the London School of Economics.

I was so impressed by the Charter that I put it on a web page and undertook
to coordinate the collection of signatures in Australia. It would be very
helpul if other volunteers came forward in other countries to do a similar
task locally.

Had Charter 99 already been implemented, the crises of, eg, Ruanda, Kosovo
and East Timor could have been been properly handled by UNO without
excessive reliance on the US, NATO, etc. There would also be a prohibition
on the OECD, IMF, WTO, etc, from acting against the interests of the world's
common people, and unjustly exploiting the world's common resources.

Kind regards
Brian Jenkins
