While I suggested this at some point, introducing this would probably create a big compatibility issue. Sure, you can make the default to use <message/>. but I imagine services only supporting <iq/>. Also, going <iq/> on its own doesn't actually solve reliability concerns. The service might not retrieve the response, while the recipient did process the notification. It has been suggested that some in-band (i.e. within the item payload) mechanism might be better, placing the burden on the client, but that creates issues with existing payload formats. Another is to use SHIM for exchanging serials or something. The jury is still out on this. ralphm
