Patrakov <[email protected]> --- I think that the difference can be explained by the fact that PulseAudio, unlike aplay, at startup, tries to open many different PCM devices for probing purposes. In other words, PulseAudio probes for spdif, analog (in various forms) and hdmi, and aplay opens, ultimately, only the hw:0 device that is responsible for analog output. Probing for spdif can explain the clicks that you heard.
