Try this before and after closing the laptop lid:
pasuspender -- speaker-test -Dhw:0 --channels=2
That will play some noise. Press ctrl-c when you've had enough.
pasuspender makes pulseaudio release the alsa devices and then runs
speaker-test. The -Dhw:0 argument makes speaker-test use the hardware directly
instead of playing through pulseaudio.
Does speaker-test stop working after closing the lid?
