Talk in Skype is very bad having the local mic feedback. I'm kind of surprise
how something so basic is so hard to make it work.
It is probably a matter of your sound card being old (and unknown)
rather than a general problem.

My sound card is an old Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 SB0220.
Could you supply an alsa-info (wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo) to tell
us a little more about your hardware?
