I forgot to mention that prior to taking the log, set the internal rate
to 44100, and 

And saying this made me realize that perhaps you did your experiments
without restarting Pulseaudio? If you started Pulseaudio while the
internal rate was 48000, then Pulseaudio might think that the sound card
uses 48000 until Pulseaudio is restarted.
