I don't know what I did right, but somewhere in all the rewriting and
purging of config files and upgrading (using Debian unstable), it started
to work. I thought I was in even more trouble for a while though, because
I mainly administer that PC from another with ssh and pa has stopped
accepting connections from it when I use ssh -X. Must be something to do
with the DISPLAY setting I suppose. paplay works if I don't use the X
forwarding switch, but without -X pavucontrol won't work of course.
Anyway, I suppose this can be closed now, but I don't know whether it was
fixed because of the upgrade, Debian specific, or was never a bug and my
fault in the first place.
