OK - I'm starting to get my head around this now. Yes the M2496 has just
the 2 channels + digital, but it seems that the channels it does have are
mapped in the same places as they are on the multi channel card & also
that it (so far anyway) cleanly ignores the ones it has no use for. So the
via-ice1712.conf attached yesterday does work (I've tested analog in & out
and digital out - no way to check digital in at the moment):
- I get input/outputs as expected for the various Multi-Channel & Digital
profiles.
- If I select "System Output Only" then I get the same outcome as for
"Off", which is reasonable since this card has no monitor output.
Also I confirm that spdif does appear as the two topmost channels of
hw:0,0 in the same way as for the EWS88 and that the simultaneous
analog+digital output trick works.
