Any other thoughts? It's not in gstreamer. paplay doesn't use gstreamer, so if the problem persists with paplay, the problem is somewhere else. Since it seems most likely the driver that has broken, I think you should file a bug against the kernel in Ubuntu's bug tracker. Before doing that, it would be good to get a confirmation for that the bug indeed is in the kernel. So, downgrade your kernel and see if the problem with the HDMI output disappears.
