Hello everyone,

I'm currently talking to a developer at Apple to highlight problems with
Gurmukhi support on the Mac. I've highlighted the issues below, but if you
have anything to add, please let me know. Especially concerned with locale
issues (stuff like day + month names that still haven't been fixedin CDLR).

Thanks,
Jinder

My initial list of issues is this:

* Gurmukhi MT (GMT) appears
to be a font of very poor quality on my screen, especially at smaller
text sizes, although this is a cosmetic issue and doesn't affect
functionality. Windows' Raavi font is a quite substantially better
font.

* GMT is missing 0A33 (LLA), 0A01 (Adak Bindi) and 0A03
(Visarga), which have been in Unicode for a number of years now -
especially LLA.

* GMT is also now missing 0A51 (Udaat) and 0A75 (Yakash) added in Unicode 5.1.

* GMT does not include the full set of conjuncts specified on Unicode 5.0 Ch09
p319.

*
Dda (ਡ) + Nukta is converted to Rra (ੜ), and Ddha (ਢ) + Nukta is
converted to Rrha (ੜ੍ਹ). These are incorrect conversions and are
probably a reminant of the ISCII standard used in MacGurmukhi. The two
sequences are not canonically equivalent in the Unicode standard, and
as such, the conversion should be removed.

* The ATSUI rendering
engine does not specifically prevent incorrect independent vowel signs
and vowel sign sequences as specified in Unicode 5.0 Ch09 p318.

*
ATSUI does not prevent the incorrect placement of vowel signs, or the
doubling up of vowel signs like Uniscribe does. For example: ਿ + ਰ
(ਿਰ) is the same as ਰ + ਿ (ਰਿ) visually on a Mac. This is extremely
problematic because classic font-based Gurmukhi is typed the first way,
although in Unicode, only the second sequence is really considered
valid. The first sequence will show with a dotted circle in
Linux/Windows.

* The QWERTY Gurmukhi keyboard appears to be missing Dda (ਡ) and Ddha (ਢ)!
