# Needs Design Decision #

The proposal here is to upload a small text file that creates custom facts on
the target managed node.

Once there, these custom facts can be used in conditional logic in site.pp to
classify the machine.

## Advantages ##

 * Simple to implement
 * Does not require the Puppet Dashboard

## Possible Disadvantages ##

 * Requires the end user to write code to classify systems
 * Does not require the Puppet Dashboard

Feature #8284: node classification should be based on facts

The node classification of cloud-pack should be based on a custom fact.

This would have the following advantages.

* removes a large portion of the code-base and complexity. It could be as easy
as scp-ing a single file with a single line
* conforms closer to how people use Puppet today (specifying node definitions
in a manifest)
* confirms more closely to my understanding of how people are currently using
Puppet in the cloud.
