I think you are right.

Meanwhile, though, I still can't work out a general solution to this problem.  
So if we assume mpsched -s always returns the number of cores then that's one 
part of the problem solved.

If we consider the machinfo sample you submitted -

   4 cores, 8 logical processors per socket
   4.79 GT/s QPI, CPU version E0
          Active processor count:
          2 sockets
          6 cores (3 per socket)

So now how do I get the cores per socket count without parsing machinfo?
