Eli Young commented on PUP-3901   Re: Host type has unexpected behavior and is not idempotent After doing some research, I have determined that the format of lines in a hostfile is as follows: IP canonical-hostname [alias-hostnames] This is evidenced by the fact that, when a hostname is resolved by either gethostbyname() or getaddrinfo(), the canonical name returned by those functions is canonical-hostname. See also the Windows documentation for gethostbyname() and getaddrinfo(). Incidentally, Augeas has the same assessment.
