Hi! I'm actually doing portable setup for my graphic/vj station. Some random things (mostly unrelated to sound).
You have ThinkPad. Don't you like it? You can try some other stuff than eeepc. ThinkPad X30-X40, even when used for 3-4 years, are far more portable, reliable, hard to break, faster and cheaper than "breakable" eeepc with same hdd size/ram. They can also work longer on (new) batteries and have plenty of additional stuff (like docking stations). If you'll have PCMCIA slot - you can try PCMCIA cards. Atom is really slow CPU. It has low power consumption, so you can build smaller and cheaper laps with it (fewer batteries, less place for coolers), but it is very slow. Also Dell and Toshiba have some good 12'' (or bigger, but thinner) laps. ThinkPads X series have really hard cages for it's guts. Just take eeepc in your hand, try to do some real sound work with it - when compared to old X40 (in the same price) it is bendable, crackable, slow plastic toy. Good in general, but there are better things.
