just solved it on my desktop but not on my laptop because of the aptitude problem i emailed about before, still cannot solve that (i comment on this at the bottom).

On my desktop, luckily I found that i needed this driver dkms-gspca (http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=3503) so i run

$ sudo aptitude install gspca-modules-2.6.26-1-686

with no problem, then i did
$ sudo modprobe gspca

so now dmesg says :

41877.932030] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 10
[41878.136385] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[41879.300200] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0

and
$ lsmod | grep gspca
gspca                 639888  0
videodev               27520  2 gspca,uvcvideo
usbcore 118160 8 gspca,uvcvideo,snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,uhci_hcd,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd

i guess i just need now to make the module load automatically on startup or load it manually when i need it.

On my laptop however, when i try to aptitude install gspca i still aptitude tries to uninstall most part of my system... I have followed the instructions in the puredyne wiki and then i did an aptitude update but it continues with same problem.

altern(e)k dio:
hi again

I am trying to use my logitech "quickcam communicate STX" with GEM, when i connect the camera dmesg says

[39331.732020] usb 2-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 3
[39331.933007] usb 2-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[39332.007667] usb 2-2: New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=08d7
[39332.007681] usb 2-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0

then i go to PD and try to run the GEM/04.video/basic/00.SimpleVideo.pd
when i open the GEM window PD says
error: failed opening device: '/dev/video0'

lsusb says
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 046d:08d7 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate STX

but /dev/video0 device does not exist, there is however some
/dev/sbdev2.5_ep00 /dev/sbdev2.5_ep81 and /dev/sbdev2.5_ep82 added when i plug the cam in

i tried with sudo in case it was a permission problem and root was allowed to use it but i get the same error. I am wondering if I need to manually load some module that deals with USB video devices or maybe teak the permissions?. I thought this camera was supported by the kernel (Version 2.6.27) but maybe not the puredyne kernel? my camera is actually listed here

http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html

Logitech 213 0x046d 0x08d7 Communicate STX Sully Vc0302 Tas5130c Yes jpeg spca5xx/LE gspca v4l1/v4l2 ***

Before I used Ubuntu Studio ad the camera worked fine there, I think it also worked with 64 Studio (cannot be sure about this now, it was some time ago).

thanks again...
