ok well i've finely gotten back to trying the wireless here and found that I had to load three modules just to get the card to start working:

I looked at /etc/network/interfaces and there was only an entry for lo, does that have something to do with it? Is the interfaces file not being used anymore? I'm still pretty used to standard debian, and have noticed some changes when using Ubuntu, such as xorg. Its not a huge deal, but it is kind of inconvenient to not have wireless. Let me know if you have any ideas.
