Moving to another thread, since this is becoming specifically about
ndiswrapper rather than general wifi support.
To install an xp driver, I need to use a command like this:
sudo ndiswrapper -i path/to/driver.inf
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper
But the command is not found in the puredyne live boot environment.
I thought this might be because I messed up and did sudo make uninstall,
so just now I booted from the original live DVD that I downloaded and
same thing -- the command is not found in any of the $PATH directories.
So it seems the executable isn't there in the baseline puredyne distro
after all?
sudo find / -name ndiswrapper
/lib/modules/2.6.31-9-rt/kernel/ubuntu/ndiswrapper
/usr/src/linux-rt-headers-2.6.31-9-rt/ubuntu/ndiswrapper
The /lib/.../ndiswrapper directory contains ndiswrapper.ko, nothing else.
Do I need to compile it after all?
I think you might need to install the ndiswrapper application which is
probably not the same as the module I did
$ aptitude search ndiswrapper
p ndiswrapper-common - Common scripts required to use the
utiliti
v ndiswrapper-modules-1.9 -
p ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 - Userspace utilities for the
ndiswrapper Li
So you probably need to install ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 or ndiswrapper-common
try both and see if you can then run the command, i bet you will
btw, this is a little howto i saved couple of years ago when i needed to
use ndiswrapper, maybe it is useful for you?. I just translated very
quickly from spanish I hope it makes sense
Ndiswrapper :
Ndiswrapper is a program that emulates the windows drivers to make your
device run under linux.
For example, I put them into /home/knithx/wireless/ and this are the files:
wusb209x.sys, wusb20xp.sys, wusb54g.cat y wusb54g.inf. My device is a
Linksys WUB54G.
CD /home/knithx/wireless/
ndiswrapper -i wusb54g.inf (*)
ndiswrapper -l (**)
ndiswrapper -m
modprobe ndiswrapper
(*) Replace “wusb54g” with the name of your .inf file
(**) In this step you should get “driver present, hardware present“,
this means the driver has been detected, otherwise thats not the right file.
If all went right iwconfig should show a wireless called maybe wlan0
search for a WIFI network : iwlist wlan0 scanning
connect to a WIFI network : iwconfig essid nameofthenetwork enc thepassword
