no problem asking! synaptic update would update a lot of the packages, but it wouldn't include the tweaks made at the OS level. for example, we changed the terminal emulator from xterm to urxvt - synaptic wouldn't automatically get rid of xterm or install urxvt, nor would it bring the config we created for 9.11
