To the ³Americas Group²

Geoffroy and Grant- I apologize for not being able to be in on the
conversation.

Just wanted to add something here quickly for thought. I thing that the
SPARK Festival of Electronic Music and Art, held in Minneapolis, is
something that the we as ³Puredyne Group² will be able to participate in
next year. It has been picking up a lot of interest here in the US lately.
The 2010 festival just ended.

For thought.

pure:dyne

I think a wiki for an americas division could definitely be useful.  it
could keep discussion off this list for one thing, and allow for a more
structured organization of what each of us as individuals is interested in
working on and what we as a group see the needs to be in our region.

i've been thinking a lot about a sort of outreach program of workshops and
other educational opportunities for 'new users'.   i see pure:dyne as a nice
platform for that outreach, since it gives a specific field of interest the
foreground.  i'm planning on trying to develop a series of lectures or
workshops to introduce concepts of computer audio to musicians and artists
who might have an interest.  my goal is to make open source software a bit
more accessible to those without the bug to dig into the world of computers
and discover it on there own.  i know from my own experience coming to
computer music as an amateur musician with an interest in electronics and
synthesis, that it was a long and confusing road just to scratch the surface
of the possibilities of FLOSS.  It really came out of the necessity of being
completely broke and without a nice apple laptop and commercial sound
software to play with.  I've had a 3 year apprenticeship with the linux OS
and FLOSS applications.  I spent over a month trying to compile my own RT
kernel (before i was aware of pure:dyne) on old laptops and craigslist
desktops, getting successfully closer to a working linux audio setup.  I've
dipped my toes into Csound, Pd, superCollider, chuck, nyquist, fluxus,
processing, ardour, linux MIDI and synthesis software, and so on, trying to
find a direction or an easy way to start actually creating.  i'm the type of
person who enjoys process of discovery and troubleshooting.  but i think
most of the creative audience around me has no interest in hacking make
scripts in order to successfully compile a package for your particular
setup.  (i had an experience the other day that made me proud of myself and
feel like all my self education hasn't been in vain when I hacked a make
script for a LADSPA vocoder plugin so that it could use my version of gcc...
a few years ago i would have just given up in despair, not even knowing
where to turn...)  I'd like to play the role of missionary i suppose, I'm
not a guru, still a pilgrim, but feel like i can show others the light... to
speak metaphorically.

this, of course, is only my experience locally.  i'm not sure how this
applies to others, but my conversation with gef left me feeling like we find
ourselves in similar circumstances.
