Thanks. I was myself suspecting that Internet -- Internet 2 issues 
might be at the root of the problem. Your response helps me identify 
that switchover point.

With enough datapoints and responses it is easier for me to provide a 
concise report to my ISP tech support, otherwise they just say the 
problem is with my browser... In other words, if I speaka da geeka in 
sufficient detail, the frontline support staff get clueless enough to 
refer me to the people who actually know enough technical stuff to 
get things done, usually within the hour.

The last time that happened, and I couldn't contact a selection of 
sites in the US for a couple of days, I sent a tracert that showed 
how a couple of the ISP's own routers had somehow started playing 
pingpong with requests (...>A>B>C>B>C>B>C... loop ad infinitum).
