That means that before you send any mail you must retrieve your own
mail. That's how yahoo makes sure their servers are not used to do spam
(it does not really work, anyway).
You first check your mail via POP3 and then the SMTP server allows your
computer to send mail. I believe no password is required for the SMTP
request.
Using yahoo from swikis would mean your swiki server first checks
e-mail. That would work however would not make much sense.
