This is very strange. Sound used to work on my x86 linux machine when it
had RH6.something but doesn't now it has been 'upgraded' to 7.1

The sound plugin is compiled and built, but apparently /dev/dsp does not
exist. I have no idea what the appropriate response (aside from "Eat
sh*t and die you stupid machine!") would be. Experts? Beuller? Anyone?

It's my considered opinion that Lex's changes ought to be incorporated,
but so far I haven't been able to arrange it.
