Hi Holger, I took the time to look at it. It looks like a packaging issue. The archive found on cheeseshop ( http://pypi.python.org/packages/source/p/py/py-0.9.1.tar.gz#md5=daab8d9a814eab31809d973370d23600) does not even contain the c-extension directory. easy_install -f http://codespeak.net/py/dist/download.html works.
