AFAIK there has not been a successful reverse engineered implementation of the Skype protocol, and Skype has not released an API for Linux. Shortly, yes I would guess many people would be interested, but it is a large job to make and since noone has started yet it would not come any time soon. Also, not many Jabber clients support audio and video so I do not see the functionality other then the IM part that is very usable. Lastly, SIP and Jingle from Google is the open source way to go in my opinion. Personally I hope for more support this way and not SKype way (plus webcam support, this we really need!).
