And just by the way, Jabber has a built in capability called pubsub or
publish subscribe. It provides a way for a Jabber user to subscribe to
feeds that would be published by someone or other. The capability allows a
Jabber client to do the Right Thing (whatever it may be) with incoming
news and not just show it as a normal incoming message, and it allows all
the stuff behind the scenes to handle the information properly as well.

This is, of course, terribly abstract and ideal, though: such a feature is
worthless without clients supporting pubsub and publishers publishing.

I just thought I'd mention it for anyone who might be interested. It is a
related idea with potential, as unrealized as that potential may be.
