It sounds to me like issues on the ICQ end. From your description it sounds like you could log in before but now you can't despite having reverted to the software you previously used. I know it appears to have logged in with 0.8, but perhaps it failed at a later stage of the logging in process. In any case, lots of people have reported success with both 0.8 and 0.8a, so there isn't anything absolutely fatal in the software. It's certainly possible that something about your specific situation triggers a bug, but it's also possible that ICQ is having issues at the moment. It's also possible that they've changed their protocol and we'll have to adapt.
