Well that doesn't necessarily discount a problem in the login sequence. One main difference between 0.8 and 0.8a is that the latter handles errors more correctly, bailing out instead of forging ahead when bailing is the correct thing to do. Perhaps part of the login is failing but 0.8 is blindly and stupidly ignoring the failure. In any case it sounds like it's workable for you, so great.
