I was using CUDA with driver 190 from Debian.
CUDA 3.0 (and OpenCL) needs driver 195, CUDA 2.x needs
at least 190, at least according to my experience.


As for compiling kernel modules try installing
nvidia-kernel-dkms which not automatically compiles
latest version of driver for current kernel.
It is working for me.
