You are correct that there was a conflict. My Fedora 10 install includes both the openjdk and gcj implementations. The openjdk implementation was previously set as the default. Using the "alternatives --config java" command, I switched the default java to the gcj implementation and eclipse now creates PyDev projects without errors.
