That was it!  Good guess!  With this version (5.6.1), opening and 
closing any of the GUI elements, resizing (i.e., folding/unfolding 
paragraphs) moving any active gui element, changing their stacking 
order, and closing (with ESC) any of them -- all these operations work 
as expected and show no rendering errors.  (Every one of them had shown 
some rendering anomalies previously.)
