Yes, that is what I think I will have to do, as I said in the original post. There is the problem that a single frame can easily take too long -- a bad disk seek can take a few tens of milliseconds, then there is decoding and transfer on top of that. Perhaps I need another process in the background that pre-loads the images into kernel cache or tmpfs. Or perhaps I need an SSD. Or both.
