The code you posted works and displays the label for me.

My bet is on that you don't have OpenGL drivers installed correctly.
What does glxinfo print when you run the command in a terminal?

If you can, try the proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers - the open source
ones are not yet full featured and tend to be buggy. Also make sure
you don't have Mesa libraries installed on top of the proprietary
driver - that could cause such crash as well.
