I think I had an easier time because I chose a mathematically simple
definition of frame, as simply "position mod 3". I think a simple and
systematic solution like that makes sense as an internal
representation. But that doesn't address the question of external
interface for users; if there are well-established standards ("only in
your dreams, pal!") we should use them.
