No, of course not. The test just assumed the client encoding was set to utf8 and I didn't notice is because my test database was set to utf8. Here in Germany ASCII is not sufficient, I had to use LATIN1 in the past. But nowadays, UTF8 has really become the de facto standard and I think that's good.
