I'm biased against lighttpd from experience 2 years ago, so won't comment. If you want to talk about scaling mod_perl , php or even twisted, that's another topic... I've got a lot of experience on the DB and proxy levels of your stack, and know that the DB is almost always the first culprit, which is why I brought them up.
