I'm biased against lighttpd from experience 2 years ago, so won't
comment.

I will say that it would be ridiculously easy to test your setup with
an nginx install and convert back if you don't like it.

Someone else will have to chime in... I'm fairly new to Pylons
myself.  If you want to talk about scaling mod_perl , php or even
twisted, that's another topic...

I've got a lot of experience on the DB and proxy levels of your stack,
and know that the DB is almost always the first culprit, which is why
I brought them up.

I'm really interested in the paster scaling element though, as I'm
sure to be in your shoes soon.
