I don't believe this.
I changed to default_filters=[], then to default_filters=['n'], then to default_filters=['none'], then deleted default_filters in: config['pylons.app_globals'].mako_lookup = TemplateLookup( ... ) in config/environment.py. But output of my own helper is still being escaped.
