We didn't know much about Google Gears, but we had been using wxPython
in some other projects.  Also, we were simultaneously working on the
application's UI and implementation, so we didn't have a lot of time
to research something completely different.

I can put you in touch with my colleague who implemented it, after he
comes back from vacation in a week or so.
