I know what you mean. Still, tw can be a useful time saver. I would tend to shy away from anything really complex though. It looks like there's been a spurt of development with some interesting things happening in there as of late. From what I understand the hg tip has the beginnings of some capabilities that makes it possible to have self contained widgets, sort of like the template and mini controller/ app rolled into one.
