The developers marked the last release "alpha" because they believe it may not yet be feature complete (I don't recall the expected feature set at this point). Because it works so well for their usecases (as needed by substanced, largely), further development activity for deform tapered off. Resuming it requires some extra "activation energy" which the developers don't have to spare at the moment.
