Well, apache-mpm-prefork is a non-threaded web server. I have no idea how that affects things concerning python threads, other than that our PyLucene application mostly does what we want it to running under it. I'm going to try a bit harder to see if I can break it now, though...
Non-threaded might explain why it's working at all.
Another question... have people had more reliable luck running PyLucene under other Python web frameworks? It probably wouldn't be too hard to port what we have to Python cgi (though that would slow us down) or to Quixote or something, since most of what we do is straight python.
