I've been trying to compile PyLucene myself, currently by following the
instructions in INSTALL. "Make all" and "make install" works fine, but when
trying to "import PyLucene" I get a "this application failed to start
because cygiconv-2.dll was not found", though there is no need for them if
downloading the windows binary from the PyLucene site...any idea what to do?
If I copy this file into the site-packages folder, I get another message,
this time cygwin1.dll, and if I copy this I get no errormessage but Python
just halts.

Your build is depending on the cygwin libraries which is not good. The instructions in INSTALL state that you need to use the MinGW gcc/gcj distribution + its libiconv. See 'Notes for Windows' near the bottom of
http://svn.osafoundation.org/pylucene/trunk/INSTALL.

Andi..
